Purpose Of Garage Door RollersYour garage door has many parts that work together. The rollers stay in the tracks and help keep the door from falling. There are two common types of rollers. Steel and nylon are common materials that manufacturers use to make garage door rollers. Steel rollers are more durable and last longer than nylon. Nylon rollers are not as noisy as steel rollers. However, the nylon material will wear out faster.
When Should You Replace Rollers? Most people wait until their rollers break before they replace them. Roller replacement depends on the type of rollers you have in your system. Steel rollers usually last from 15-20 years if they have proper maintenance. There are other reasons to replace your rollers such as:
- Rust - Steel rollers rust easier than nylon. If you notice rust on your rollers, but sure to call us right away. Rust damages other parts of your system.
- Wearing out - If you notice pieces of nylon material on your garage floor, there’s a chance it’s from your roller. Over time, the roller wears down and gets thinner. Even if it’s not broken, be sure to replace thinning rollers immediately.
- Cracks - Either type of roller can get cracks. Cracked rollers will not allow the door to work properly. This will also cause further damage to your door.
